This is Halloween, this is Halloween!
Halloween is only a few days away and if you haven't gotten all your spooky gear out by now and set up, what have you been doing?!
Though Halloween has become this fun-filled holiday with decorations, candy and dressing up, it wasn't always like this. So, if you don't actually have any of your spooky gear out by now, it's totally fine since this special holiday didn't start out as the way it is celebrated today.
The original start of this festive day began way back during ancient Celtic civilization, nearly 2,000 years ago! This day originally marked the last day of summer and the start of harvesting season along with the cold winter.
During this time period winter was often associated with multiple deaths so on this day before their first official start to winter, the Celts believed that the veil between the world of the living and dead had become blurred, allowing spirits to visit the living.
Huge sacred bonfires were made which the Celts brought both crops and animals to burn as sacrifices. These sacrifices were for the Celtic deities in order to receive a milder winter for the village. They often dressed up as animals during it as well. It was believed that by doing so, it would scare the evil spirits away, but allowed the good ones to tell them prophecies of what the future would hold.
By the 9th century, Christianities influence took over the Celtic's. Though the bonfires still remained relatively the same, dressing up as animals changed into costumes of angels, devils, and saints.
This holiday soon made it's way over to America where the first idea of parties for this day began. With these parties, ghost stories and tales of the dead often took place between neighbors, but it wasn't until a much later date that Halloween was celebrated nationally.
By the 1920s and 50s, Halloween had begun to take the shape of how it's celebrated today! By trick-or-treating, dressing up, and having fun with friends and family.
Halloween is a holiday that has had many changes throughout its years, and we at The Mad Tea Cup want to take part in the celebration of this wonderful day as well!
On October 31st, anyone (no matter the amount of growth cake taken or shrink drink consumed) dressed up as a character from Alice in Wonderland will receive a free small or medium drink of their choice!
